Pregnancy is a time of incredible transformation and beauty, and what better way to commemorate this special time than with a maternity photo session?! A maternity photo shoot is a session where you are photographed as an expecting mother to celebrate your pregnancy. These images often highlight your beautiful belly and capture the emotions and excitement of this unique stage in your life. You may opt for more intimate photos, choosing to really highlight the beauty of your pregnant body. Other mamas prefer to use their maternity shoot as an opportunity to get some family photos with their partner or older children.

Whether you opt for a professional photographer or a DIY session with a loved one, maternity photos are a beautiful way to document your journey and create lasting memories. These photos will be fun keepsakes for you (and your sweet baby) to look back on in the years to come. Below is my list of everything you need to know before preparing for your maternity shoot:

When is the Best Time for a Maternity Photo Shoot?

Timing is key when it comes to maternity photos. Most expectant mothers choose to schedule their shoots between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your baby bump is beautifully pronounced but you’re not yet at the stage where you might feel too uncomfortable or tired, or chance going into labor before your scheduled shoot. Of course, the ideal timing can vary depending on your personal comfort and preferences, so choose a time that best suits you and your schedule.

What to Wear for a Maternity Photo Shoot

"What should you wear?!" Choosing the right outfit can make a significant difference in how your photos turn out. Here are some tips and outfit ideas to help you have the maternity photoshoot of your dreams:

  1. Embrace Your Shape: Maternity pictures are meant to show off your beautiful bump! Opt for clothing that highlights your baby bump rather than hiding it. There truly are lots of options that will create flattering and beautiful photos. Fitted or flowy dresses that accentuate your curves can create stunning visuals. A bralette exposing the belly and paired with your favorite jeans is one of the most timeless maternity looks. My personal favorite? A crop cami with a sheer maxi skirt, showing off that gorgeous baby bump. The most important thing is to choose an outfit you are comfortable in and your confidence will shine!
  2. Consider Soft Fabrics: Soft, stretchy fabrics will not only ensure comfort but also allow for flattering drapes and shapes. Materials like cotton, jersey, lace and chiffon are excellent choices.
  3. Choose Colors Wisely: Solid colors tend to work best as they keep the focus on you and your bump. Classic shades like pastels, neutrals, and earth tones can create a timeless look. However, don’t shy away from bold colors if that’s what you love, just make sure the colors coordinate with the baby’s room design if you plan to display them!
  4. Incorporate Special Pieces: Adding special touches like lace, ruffles, baby shoes or even a family heirloom can add a personal touch to your photos. You may consider using seasonal props as well! (Think Christmas bows around the belly or little pumpkins in the fall.)

If you will be including your partner or other children in your maternity photography session, I recommend choosing your outfit first and then selecting outfits for the rest of your family in complementary colors. (A good maternity photographer should be able to give you some tips for selecting your family color palette.)

Showcasing the Belly Bump: Wearing Just a Bra

Sometimes, the most beautiful way to highlight your baby bump is to keep things simple and intimate. Choosing to wear just a bra and underwear can create a stunning, minimalistic look that allows your bump to take center stage.

  1. Focus on the Bump: Wearing a beautiful bra can draw attention directly to your belly, capturing the pure essence of your pregnancy. It’s a bold and empowering choice that emphasizes the natural beauty of your growing bump. (You may miss it one day!)
  2. Enhanced Comfort: A well-chosen bra can provide the support you need while allowing you to stay comfortable and relaxed during the shoot. Davin & Adley offers several great options, offering both style and support without sacrificing comfort.
  3. Elegant Simplicity: The simplicity of wearing a bra can create a timeless and elegant look. When paired with the right setting and photographer, this minimalist approach can result in breathtaking images that focus on the beauty of your pregnancy.

So which bra should you wear? Here are a couple of favorites:

The Riley Bralette

Designed with the expectant mother in mind, The Riley features a soft, stretchy material that accommodates your growing bump while providing gentle support. It's seamless design and adjustable straps ensure a perfect fit, allowing you to focus on posing rather than adjusting your outfit. With delicate lace details and a flattering cut, it’s perfect for adding a touch of elegance (and dare I say, sexiness) to your photos. The best part is, this beautiful bralette is available in sizes S-3X and designed for both pumping and nursing, so you'll be able to get use out of it well beyond your maternity photo session.

The Ella Bralette

For a chic and glamourous bralette look, The Ella Bralette is a fantastic choice. It's smooth, supportive fabric and beautiful lace design and hardware make it a versatile option that pairs well with a variety of outfits. The Ella offers both comfort and style in standard, busty and plus sizes, making it ideal for those long photo sessions where you want to look great and feel relaxed. Like The Riley, The Ella bra is also designed to transition through all of pregnancy, nursing, and pumping, making it a great option for maternity photos AND postpartum.

Your maternity photo shoot is an opportunity to celebrate your pregnancy and capture the beauty of this special time. By choosing outfits that highlight your bump and ensure comfort, you’ll be able to fully enjoy the experience and create beautiful memories. With the right wardrobe choices, (including the stylish and supportive Davin & Adley bras like The Riley and The Ella) you’ll be ready for your upcoming session.
